Fronted by husband and wife Kyle and Gretta Miller, Tow'rs is a five piece band based out of Flagstaff, Arizona that first came to my attention with their second album, 2015's The Great Minimum. Their music blends folk and rock and is awash in the vocal harmonies of the married couple that serve as the main songwriters for the band's material. The other three members, Emma Crislip, Kyle Keller and Kory Miller all help flesh out the band's warm sound, be it on piano, strings, brass, guitar or percussion.
One thing Tow'rs have always been known for is touching on the human condition in their lyrics. Love, heartache, faith, kindness to others and societal ills are just some of the topics the band takes on, with love in its many forms at the heart of their fourth album, New Nostalgia. Tracks like "Tightrope Walker" and "All The Sundered Things" embrace the joy of being in love with another. But "Draw The Line" dives into a deeper love. Love of our fellow man and woman in these very fractured times, and it serves as the album's emotional centerpiece and a call for compassion. "What kind of world are we building for our children?" the Millers ask while holding those in power accountable for the division and hate being spread. At over six minutes long, album closer "Pink Confetti" is another standout, a declaration of wanting to be the best version of oneself for the person you love. The piano based ballad ends things on a gorgeous note.
New Nostalgia continues along the path of folk-rock Tow'rs established from their first release. It comes along just as we make our way into the fall, and this album deserves to be a part of your autumn soundtrack.
