Yes, Old Sea Brigade sounds like a band, but it is actually the moniker used by Ben Cramer for his musical project. Born in Atlanta but now based out of Nashville, Cramer started releasing music as Old Sea Brigade in 2016 with a series of EP's, four in all including a holiday EP in 2017. Ode To A Friend is his debut album, definitely rooted in folk music, but also delivering rock, pop and Americana vibes. There are even some atmospheric electronic elements on several tracks, giving the album a diverse feel and avoiding the trap so much of this type of music can fall into of one acoustic guitar based song after another. Most of the eleven tracks here are ballads, be they slow or mid-tempo. Album opener "Sinkhole" is a highlight, with stuttering electronic beats added to this tender ballad. "Seen A Ghost" is another favorite along with "Resistance", both more on the sparse side until the lush choruses rush in. Be sure to check out the videos for two more of the album's ballads below, the piano based "Feel You" and the acoustic "Hope". This is a debut not to be missed.
