Based out of Copenhagen, the trio WhoMadeWho is now in their fifteenth year of existence. There have been numerous single releases since their inception, as well as five albums, and 2018 sees the group release their sixth full-length in Through The Walls.
Comprised of Tomas Hoffding, Jeppe Kjellberg and Tomas Barfod, WhoMadeWho base the sound of Through The Walls in electronic music. There are synths, electronic beats and drum machines prevalent on each track, with guitar and bass brought into the mix as well. Hoffding's vocals are often electronically altered in keeping with the feel of the album.
"Neighbourhood" kicks things off and is my favorite track of the twelve on Through The Walls. Despite the upbeat dance elements, there is a feel of melancholy running through this song that grabbed a hold of me. The stuttering "Crystal" has a sinister feel, enhanced by the digital effects on the vocals. "Dynasty" is straight out of the 80's, a delightful slice of synth-pop. Other highlights include the tropical feel of "I Don't Know", the chilled vibe of "Belong" and the moody ballad "Surfing On A Stone".
Even with its experimental electronic sounds, Through The Walls is an accessible album from start to finish, sure to please fans of electronic and synth-pop alike.
Favorite tracks: "Neighbourhood", "Crystal", "Goodbye To All I Know", "Dynasty"
Through The Walls was released January 19th, 2018 via Embassy Of Music.
