Groeni is New Zealand producer/musician Alexander Green. His first release was a self titled EP from 2012 and this year saw his return with the February release of his second EP Hewn. This time around, Green took his music in an even darker direction than his debut. The five songs on Hewn are dizzying productions of deep bass and glitchy, downtempo electronic, but with Green's vocals at their center.
There's a soulful element in play here too, Groeni's music doesn't seem out of place with the current wave of electronic based pop and R&B we're loving so much around these parts. Think Banks, SOHN or Until the Ribbon Breaks for reference. Green gives haunting performances throughout with "The Oak", "Fold" and "Pardons" immediate standouts. It's getting late in the year and I didn't want to miss showing this EP some love. Hewn is a gorgeous listen for all of its 24 minutes and well worth seeking out.
Favorite tracks: "The Oak", "Fold", "Pardons"
Hewn was released February 24th, 2015 on vinyl and as a digital download via the Project Mooncircle label.
