Australian duo The Black Ryder returned this year with the follow-up to their debut album, almost five years after its American release. The Sydney based band is made up of Aimee Nash and Scott Von Ryper and their sound encompasses several genres, from dream pop to shoegaze to various rock incarnations. The Door Behind The Door has stuck with me since its release in February.
Mann's dreamy vocals take front and center on slow burners like "Seventh Moon", "Let Me Be Your Light" and "All That We Are". From wailing guitars to moody walls of keyboards, these songs surround and embrace you in their warmth, it's truly a lovely listen from start to finish. Von Ryper takes over the vocal lead on personal favorite "The Going Up Was Worth The Coming Down" which is a much more acoustic track, standing out from the rest of the album impressively.
The Black Ryder are not afraid to give these songs room to breathe and grow. Five of the album's nine songs are over six minutes long, with the beautiful orchestral closer "(Le Dernier Sommeil) The Final Sleep" clocking in at over twelve minutes. This is the type of album to put on, turn the lights out and just get lost in. It's one of 2015's finest.
