Dexter Tortoriello branched off from the duo Houses for his own solo project in 2014. Recording under the name Dawn Golden, Tortoriello caught the attention of Diplo who signed the project to his Mad Decent label for a 2011 EP. 2014 saw the first Dawn Golden full length released and Still Life comes in at the #10 spot on my favorites of 2014.
The album is cold and electronic yet warm and inviting at the same time. On Still Life, Tortoriello exorcises past demons, be they emotional or personal. The music is electronic but it is his vocals that steal the show, twisted with, screwed with, sometimes buried under effects, sped up, slowed down, but never losing their punch or weight. From gorgeous soundscapes like "Discoloration" and "Brief Encounter" to the intensity of "I Won't Bend", Still Life is a full length journey worth experiencing in this singles dominated musical landscape.
Favorite tracks: "Discoloration", "I Won't Bend", "Last Train", "All I Want"
