I have Pandora to thank for discovering the music of Emancipator. The project of Portland, Oregon based producer Douglas Appling, Emancipator can always be relied on for gorgeous, downtempo electronic music. His track "When I Go" from his 2006 debut Soon It Will Be Cold Enough came on Pandora a few years ago and I've been hooked on his chilled vibes ever since.
Dusk To Dawn is the third Emancipator album and it continues his formula of downtempo, usually over-laid with hip-hop beats. But his music continues to grow more organic with each release and here it is drenched in the lovely violin work of Ilya Goldberg. He is all over lead track "Minor Cause", a song that sums up every thing I love about Appling's work in just over five minutes. It's a chillout track with a beautiful melody, a perfect winter soundtrack. "Afterglow" utilizes haunting keyboards and an ethereal atmosphere, while "Natural Cause" highlights the lovely piano work of Marcus Marino. I can always count on Emancipator to deliver. Downtempo electronic simply doesn't get much better than this.
