I'm not really big on Christmas albums, I have a few favorites and they serve me well each holiday. I'm not one to seek out or sample all the endless releases that arrive every year, unless one of my favorite artists decides to dabble in the holiday cheer. Hey Rosetta! have certainly risen to that status over the last few years, cemented by one of the best concerts I saw this year.
The St John's, Newfoundland six-piece have now graced us with this four track EP that focuses more on seasonal sounding music than straight up Christmas songs. A Cup Of Kindness Yet features three original tunes and a melancholy rock version of "O Come O Come Emmanuel". Opener "Carry Me Home" was written during the band's Australian tour in April and is the most upbeat song here tempo wise. Closer "New Year Song" has been around a long time, written seven years ago in fact. It has been performed often at their annual hometown Christmas show and finally sees an official release, complete with the band singing "Auld Lang Syne" as the song closes.
As good as the other three tracks are, the true stunner is "The First Snow". It's simply the most gorgeous song I've heard from this band. Tim Baker sings this piano ballad while the atmospheric background draws up images of a blizzard going on all around him as the band's signature strings also build in the mix. It's a mesmerizing song on an excellent holiday EP.
A Cup Of Kindness Yet was released November 20, 2012 on ATO Records.
