I've taken quite a liking to this project based out of Gainesville, Florida. As previously featured here on Now It's On, And The Giraffe are primarily Nick Roberts and Josh Morris. The two best friends put out their debut EP, Something For Someone, last year and are now returning with an expanded line-up and their second release.
Added to the mix are Malcolm Martin on drums and Robert Edmondson on bass as well as saxophone and bass clarinet for Creature Collector, the second EP from the band. And The Giraffe dub their music 'dream-folk' and it is as fitting a description as you'll find. The songs are structured with acoustic guitar and vocal, then enhanced with electronics and a wide selection of instrumentation. This EP was recorded in various studios and basements around Nashville during a two month stretch this summer and it is a nice, cohesive 25 minutes of music.
"Find My Name In The Sun" features banjo along with acoustic guitar and opens things in a quietly melodic way although things get punched up a notch in the last minute of the song. "Sorry" is a sweetly sad acoustic ballad, which also takes a surprising turn in its last minute. My personal favorite is "The Silent", the prettiest thing I've heard from the band at this point in their young career. It's a very affecting vocal and acoustic guitar piece and the highlight of another superb release by And The Giraffe.
Creature Collector was self-released by And The Giraffe November 2, 2012.
