Graph Rabbit began as the solo project for Brooklyn-based artist/composer Austin Donohue but has now been expanded to a duo with the inclusion of pianist Shy Kedmi. Donohue has led a busy career as a filmmaker, musician and composer and started Graph Rabbit in 2010. With the help of producer Allen Farmelo, Snowblind marks the debut for the project and it is quite the entrance into the music landscape.
The music on Snowblind is rather minimalist, but that does not prevent it from being stunningly beautiful. Essentially the songs are based on acoustic guitar, then fleshed out with ambient electronic sounds and Kedmi's analog synth work. While tracks like "White Birds" and "Falling Snow" rely heavily on the guitar work musically, it is the songs that are colored with the cinematic electronic soundscapes that truly stand out.
Album opener "My Name" starts with bleeping synths before the lovely acoustic guitar comes in. It's an entrancing song, even more so when listened to through headphones. The duo's most arresting instrument is Donohue's breathtaking falsetto. His vocal work carries the album emotionally, a magnificent performance throughout. Nowhere is this more evident than on the amazing first single "Only Fields", the standout track on Snowblind and the one garnering Graph Rabbit much deserved attention. Donohue delivers a vulnerable vocal over the tender musical bed of ambient sounds and plucked guitar. It is a must hear song on a must hear album. One of the best debuts of 2012.
