It's been quite the year for Jason Lytle. Reunion shows with his band Grandaddy, talk of a new Grandaddy record in his future, both things unimaginable when he disbanded the critical favorites in 2006, and now promotion is revving up for his second solo album on Anti- Records.
Dept. Of Disappearance is set for release on October 16th, with a solo tour also planned, and from the four studio tracks I have heard so far, this may be my favorite Lytle full-length since Grandaddy's Sumday. Here then is the first music video released from the album for the track "Your Final Setting Sun". I first heard this song on the very limited Yankee Dirtbag CD Lytle sold on his Australian Tour earlier this year and it was done as a piano ballad. Little did I know the studio version would be a full on Grandaddy-esque track, complete with driving guitars, a sighing, harmonic chorus and all those wonderfully weird Lytle keyboard effects that always seem to fit perfectly somehow.
The video, done by Mike Aho, briefly features Lytle strumming his guitar on televisions amongst the goings-on of a strange cult. Odd, yet entertaining. I'd expect nothing less from my favorite songwriter working today.
