Released in August of 2011 in the U.K., the third studio album from Bombay Bicycle Club has finally made its way to the United States. "A Different Kind Of Fix" features the London based band's eclectic take on indie rock and is yet another strong Brit-rock release to arrive State-side.
Their latest album is a fairly bombastic, energetic affair. There is not much let-up until the finale and it makes for a rousing listen. Album opener "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep" is one of the most melodic tunes of the bunch, which then gives way to "Bad Timing" and its bustling bass line and echoed guitars. "Your Eyes" is a bouncy pop track complete with hand claps and a chorus of vocals closing it out.
A number of the songs on "A Different Kind Of Fix" approach post-rock territory musically, screaming, reverbed guitars making for a hazy background as vocalist Jack Steadman pokes his way out of the soaring noise of "Take The Right One" and "What You Want". "Beggars" is a personal favorite, all booming drums that ends in a dreamy bed of background vocal sighs.
As rollicking as much of the album is, the closing track "Still" astonishes you with its quiet beauty. The only true ballad on this release, the song is primarily Steadman singing in an anguished falsetto with only piano accompaniment. 'Did he fill the empty spaces, was he everything that I'm not?' he asks a cheating lover before the chorus declares 'your lips stay perfectly still' as the last word is looped, manipulated and distorted for effect. It's a heart breaking, jaw dropping conclusion to another can't miss 2012 release.
"A Different Kind Of Fix" was released in the U.S. January 17, 2012 on A&M/Octone Records
