I'm thrilled to see another of my local favorites are back with some new music. The Juliets self titled debut was one of my favorite albums of last year, as a matter of fact only Mumford & Sons "Sigh No More" kept it from being my favorite release of 2010. So I have definitely been awaiting some new music from the band, and they do not disappoint with this three song EP.
"Awaited Season" serves as a preview of their upcoming second full length "Perfect Season", currently scheduled for release this fall. The three songs here are set to be included on that release and once again, Jeremy Freer and company are serving up top notch pop music. Call it indie pop, chamber pop, classical flavored pop, whatever, once again The Juliets excel at accessible, unforgettable melodies. I have my opinions on bands and artists from this area that should be breaking out wider nationally, and The Juliets are certainly at the top of that list.
"Heart In Heart" is a short but sweet upbeat guitar driven rocker, while "Fashion" features prominent piano work from Freer and dominating beats from Jaclyn (Jax) Phillips on drums. As good as these two songs are, the highlight for me is "A Perfect Season", a midtempo ballad with Freer going in and out of his falsetto while Kaylan Mitchell's cello and Sarah Myers' violin swirls beautifully around your head.
The Juliets line-up has changed slightly since that debut album with Phillips taking over on drums and Ashton Hopkins now on bass, but the band has not missed a beat and sound as tight and polished on record as the original line-up did on their debut. This three song preview will leave you desperate to hear the rest of the new material The Juliets plan to release later this year. "Perfect Season" moves instantly to one of my most anticipated fall releases. I can't recommend this enough.
